STAY IN TOUCH

This poem was written for my Tribute To A KING® series dedicated to honoring the great men of music. The premier show was Sept 12th 2010 shortly after the birthday, Aug 29th of Michael Jackson who had died earlier that year.

Remember The Times

I remember the first man on the moon…
I remember Martin Malcolm Marcus and Huey great black leaders GONE TOO SOON like you…
I remember the Jackson 5 Afros and bellbottoms…
I remember recess… chasing girls to feel their apple bottoms…
I remember life as a youth… ghetto sirens and Clark Kent phone booths…
I remember the now dead and gone… laying in my bed listening to the Quiet Storm… one finger on PLAY the other on RECORD taping all those Debbie Simms love songs…
I remember Saturday morning cartoons Fat Albert and The Gang, She-Ra Mum-Ra and He-Man, Thundercats hoooooo, GI Joe, Muppet Babies and the Smurfs
Saved By The Bell wasn’t a cartoon but those girls were sweeterthan red Kool-Aid!
Remember Rocket Robin Hood and Hercules? These were the things that we grew up to… all while lisnin’ to you…
I remember riding my bike with the banana seat… mines had streamers cause my dad didn’t know any better…
I remember peanut butter lunches and trips to the science centre fights after school cause we didn’t know any better…
I remember the time… just like it was yesterday…
Watching the Wonder Years wondering… are we that way…?
I remember dreaming to be the cool katt like Michael Knight… having my black car and naming it kit… I remember fights at the McDonalds and the project buildings… and the basketball court… and the schoolyard…
But one thing I always remember… we all lived to play duck duck goose!
I remember life being easy as a youth… it always seemed that way…
Today… Tomorrow… Yesterday…
I remember… the songs you sang the moon you walked… the fans that fainted when they heard you talk…
You started out as a prince with an afro… then died as a King with jheri curls…
But this is for certain… the mark you left on the world… will never be forgotten…
Michael Jackson… Michael Joseph Jackson… YOU ROCK MY WORLD… you sir were and still are BAD really BAD… so BAD you were DANGEROUS… so BAD that BEN BEAT IT… so BAD that the MAN IN THE MIRROR didn’t know whether he was BLACK OR WHITE
It’s the HUMAN NATURE in you… your style was INVINCIBLE… your lyrics HEALED THE WORLD… but MJ YOU ARE NOT ALONE when you’d say that THEY DON’T REALLY CARE ABOUT US… and like you we too are INVINCIBLE because WE ARE THE WORLD
But I CANT HELP IT after I heard that BILLIE JEAN was not your lover and that SHE’S OUT OF YOUR LIFE I realized that it was time for me TO BE STARTIN SOMETHIN with my LIBERIAN GIRL… my PYT see… THIS IS IT life is short… and if she gives me ONE MORE CHANCE then I will THRILL-HER because THE WAY SHE MAKES ME FEEL I get BUTTERFLIES… I GOT TO BE THERE! Pretty Young Thing I’LL BE THERE to help you EASE ON DOWN THE ROAD and we WONT STOP TIL WE GET ENOUGH because this love is so OFF THE WALL that I WANNA ROCK WITH YOU all night long… and if anyone’s got a problem with remembering these times then just BLAME IT ON THE BOOGIE!
Michael Jackson… Michael Joseph Jackson…
Gone Too Soon… but never forgotten.
