The current president of the United States of America won the ballots on Nov 4th. This made Barack Obama the first Black President of the United States. I woke the next morning with thoughts of this achievement.
Brother In The White House
1 day after the presidential election… I rose with an excitement… my mind was stiff and hard…
So I stroked it…
We got a brotha in the white house ya’ll…
Some will say its been a long time coming… like May 28 1916 when Jimmy Claxton became the first black man to pitch in the MLB… he made way for Jackie Robinson in ‘47… since then Mr. Robinson… the Majors have never be the same…
To think…
They used a Louisville Slugger and slugged ya in Louisville Kentucky Arizona… all over America…
Made a bat to crack home runs only to turn around and use it to make you get up out your own home and run…
But that’s exactly what he did…
Stepped up to the plate… cracked one over the gate…
He first ran for the State…
Now he’s running round bases all the way to the home plate… straight to the white house…
It’s a new era…
And in my house pictures of Martin Malcolm and Marcus ordain stained walls with memories of who we were… why we are… and where we came from…
This victory doesn’t take away 400+ years of slavery…
But it sure feels good!
In the hood people are celebrating…
Throwing up gang signs and ‘Yes We Can’ signs… cause so many waited for this sign that one-day things will change…
And it sure feels good!
Martin had a dream and stated it clearly…
He said he may not get there with us… but he has seen the Promised Land…
And it sure looks good!
Then stated…
“We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro’s basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one”
The mind has been our ghetto since boats left the shores of Ghana the streets of Soweto and the fields of the Ivory Coast…
We’ve coasted through hard times… held hands in bad times…
While trying to figure out just when it would be our time…
Now times have changed…
And my watch reads quarter past 40 acres and a mule…
Half past whites only restrooms…
Quarter to the first black man on the moon…
And now… as the clock stroke midnight…
We got a black man in the white house…
Times have changed… but will we?
If oxymoron’s make morons blind to see the light… then morons should be less dense to be made more on point…
Cause celebrating in clubs isn’t what got Obama to this point and throwing party’s never helped Martin deliver his point…
Because this could be the tipping point…
I got a text that read…
‘Rosa sat so Martin could run… Martin ran so Obama could fly’…
But now that the Phoenix is in flight… does not change the plight for you and I…
There is still so much work to do!
And while this isn’t exactly a black and white issue my grey matter sees that grey matters… because they are the ones that went through the hard ships… and we are just on the cusp of this…
This is a milestone like:
Jack Johnson becoming the first black heavy weight in 1908
1940 saw Hattie McDaniel win an Oscar in “Gone with the wind” while Booker T’s black face made a white stamp
Ella and Count Basie got Grammy’s in 1958
Thurgood Marshall in ’67 was the first black litigate
Andrew Young repped the UN in ’77
Colin Powell was chief in 89 then a Sec of state in ‘01
Condoleezza Rice was parboiled in 05
Which all lead to the rise of “Yes We Can” in ’09
Our past is the potter that molded our future… but we cannot look to our future to shape our now…
And just because we got a brotha in the white house doesn’t mean that he’ll pay bills, raise your kids nor wash a dish in your house…
1 day after the presidential election… I rose with an excitement… my mind stiff and hard…
After stroking it I realized that… now that there’s a brotha’s in the white house in charge…
The world will never be the same…
But it sure feels good!!
